태국의 마이돌대학교 시리라즈 의과대학에서 면역학 전공을 하다가 2016학년도 1학기에 외국인 복수학위생으로 입학했다. 생명공학과 생화학에 관심이 많았던 나는 생명공학분야에서 한국의 우수성을 익히 들었기 때문에 경북대 수학을 결심하게 됐다. 태국에 있었을 때 경북대 교수님 한 분과 함께 프로젝트를 했던 것도 경북대 유학을 결심하는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 평소 드라마와 영화를 통해 만나 본 한국의 문화에 대해 관심이 높았기 때문에 한국에 직접 가서 그들의 삶과 일상에 대해 배워보고 싶어졌다. 이런 나에게 경북대학교의 복수학위 프로그램은 과학 지식 습득뿐만 아니라 문화체험을 동시에 할 수 있는 일석이조의 기회였다.
경북대학교에 개설된 많은 수업 중에 나는 연구 프로젝트의 기반이 되는 수업을 많이 들었다. 비록 수업은 한국어로 진행됐지만, 교재나 예시 설명이 영어로 되어있어서 어려움 없이 수업을 따라갈 수 있었다. 그리고 한국 친구들이 많은 도움을 줘서 공부와 과제를 성실하게 해낼 수 있었다. 국제교류처 주관의 버디 프로그램은 낯선 이국땅에서 처음 생활하는 외국인에게 큰 도움이 된다. 나 또한 한국어와 한국 문화에 대해 잘 모를 때 버디 친구들을 통해 쇼핑할 수 있는 곳, 맛있는 음식을 파는 곳 등을 많이 알게 됐다.
한국과 태국은 여러 부분에서 비슷한 문화를 갖고 있지만 차이점도 많다. 그중 하나가 한국의 음주문화다. 태국에서는 아주 특별한 날에만 술을 마시고, 특히 일반 음식점에서는 술을 마실 수 없다. 반면에 한국은 어디서나 저렴하고 다양한 주류를 쉽게 구매할 수 있었고, 친구나 가족과 저녁식사를 하면서도 술을 마시는 문화가 새로웠다. 또, 태국의 대학은 외국인들이 참여할 수 있는 동아리가 거의 없다. 반면 경북대에는 스포츠, 전통음악, 요리, 봉사활등 등의 다양한 주제로 동아리에 참여할 수 있었던 부분이 좋았다. 동아리 활동을 하면서 한국 대학생들의 문화를 체험할 수 있었고, 사람들과 소통하는 방법을 배울 수 있었다. 그래서 나는 외국인 학생들에게 최소 하나 이상의 동아리 활동을 해보는 것을 꼭 추천하고 싶다. 나는 봉사활동 동아리에 참가했는데, 경북대학교에서 후원하는 학생지원센터 한 곳과 장애인 시설에서 봉사하는 ‘SWING’에서 활동했다.
한국에서 1년 반 생활하면서 사람들과 좋은 관계를 맺고, 문제가 발생하면 대화로 원만하게 해결하는 부분이 좋았다. 또, 경북대는 역사가 깊기 때문에 오래된 건물들이 많은데, 본관 건물 앞 야외에 세워진 많은 비석들은 매우 아름답고 독특했다. 경북대학교 박물관 역시 꼭 한 번쯤 가 봐야 하는 장소라고 생각한다. 나는 일청담을 가장 좋아한다. 캠퍼스의 중심에 위치한 일청담은 넓은 공간과 테이블이 비치돼 있어 친구들과 먹고 마시며 파티를 즐기기에 최적의 장소인 것 같다.
나는 창의적인 지식인으로서 뛰어난 소통 능력을 갖춰 여러 국제기관과의 협력 분야에서 활발하게 활동하는 유능한 박사가 되고 싶다. 경북대학교 복수학위 프로그램을 통해 전문성이 있는 동료들을 사귀게 됐고, 장학금을 받는 동시에 질 높은 강의를 듣는 덕분에 나의 꿈에 한 걸음 더 빨리 다가갈 수 있었다. 혹시 외국에서 경북대 유학을 망설이고 있는 친구들이 있다면 나는 이렇게 이야기 하고 싶다. ‘우수한 강의를 들을 수 있고, 좋은 친구들을 만날 수 있는 아름다운 경북대학교에서의 생활은 여러분의 삶에 한 획을 그을 수 있을 것’이라고 말이다.

1. Would you introduce yourself (name, age(KNU student number), major, nationality?)
My name is Uttapol Permpoon (2014600017)from Thailand.
I was born in 1 September 1991 as 26 or 27years old for international or Korean age.
For my home university (Mahidol), I studyin Immunology department of Siriraj medical school, but for KNU, I belong toBiomedical department and major in Biochemistry of medical school KNU.
2. Why did youdecide to join the double degree program in KNU?
First reason, I want to study in over seacountry which have more advance technology for biomedical research, and Koreais the famous one in Asia. Second, my adviser have made the collaboration witha professor in KNU for a year then, we designed a project together. Personally,Korean cultures were presented Korean drama series and movies is quiteinteresting, so I desire to learn how Koreans live and enjoy activities indaily. Hopefully, this program will improves my scientific knowledge andprovide the best experience in Korea as well.
3. How long have you beenin KNU?
One years and half or 3 semesters
4. What was the biggest difference betweenschool life in KNU and school life in your home university?
In my home university, rare student clubsare suitable for foreigner, but KNU has diversity of student associations thatexchanged students can enjoy, such as sport activities, traditional musicalband, cooking club, and also some volunteer works. I recomments everyone tojoin at least one, because this is the best chance not only for taking theirculture from Korean friends but also learning how to communicate and work withthe people. Actually, I have joined two volunteer works, first one is participationin a young student center where supported by a KNU office, and the second isSWING club that aims to take care the disabled one.
5. What was the biggest cultural difference between South Korean and your home country?
Generally, inThailand, we will drink alcohol only in some special events, and it is notavailable in normal restaurants. In the other hand, Korean people always drinkalcohol in dinner with their friends or family. Alcohol drink in Korea is verycheap, so much variety, and it is easy to buy from the convenient storeswhenever they want. Especially, you can drink alcohol and enjoy the variousstreet food during the KNU festival, while this is illegal in Thailand.
6. What do youthink regarding the lesson offered by KNU and cultural tours offered byOIA, KNU?
KNU has several course works for students,I selected some course that support my research project. Whatever, theirlecture in Korean language but provide documents and examination in English.Luckily, Korean friends in my classes can help me to learn the lesson.
Cultural tours by OIA were so good. Ialways enjoy their activities, such as temple tours and pottery festival atMungyeong-si for last semester. Itwas amazing for the Korean cultures as food, craft items, traditional cloth(Hun-bok) and ancient housestyle. I like Bibimbub as rice mixing with various vegetable, some meat and redsource. Thank you all staffs for the trips.
7. What is the merit of studying KNU?
The best things is relationship between thepeople, although Korean quite strict about the seniority. For example, in mylaboratory, everybody respects each other and we always discuss to solve theproblem when it happen. That drives the research project go on very wellbecause the professor and senior have much experience in the particular filed.Moreover, Korean students are so friendly with the foreigner, we usually makepersonal trips to some exotic places in Korea.
8. Is there anything that you were helpedor appreciated to KNU? (Episodes related to friends, professors, and staff)
Buddy program is helpful for new foreignerstudents in KNU, especially if you did not know about Korean language andculture. Korean buddy can suggest you how to find the place for shoppingessential things or food, and also about studying.
9. If your friend or parents come to KNU,what would you like to introduce to them?
KNU is an old university in Korea, so therehas several ancient building. Outdoor exhibition carved stones in front of themain building are beautiful and unique. Historical museum is also aninteresting place.
10. Where is your favorite place in KNU?Why?
The fountain is my best place to meet, eat,drink and enjoy party with friends because it is the center of KNU and has somefree space or tables with nice atmosphere.
11. Do you have a goal to achieve? How doesstudying in KNU as an double degree student affect your goal?
Hopefully, I will be a good Ph.D. in caseof knowledge, creativity, communication, and connection with internationalinstitutes. This program provides a professional team and supports myscholarship also. It help me to success fast and efficiently.

Effective course works, good friendshipsand beautiful environments in KNU will change your life forever.
